NAVI MUMBAI: The residents of Kharghar, Taloja, Ulwe and Dronagiri are complaining of getting no water on Tuesday even after the scheduled 24-hour cut got over. After promising to restore supply by Tuesday morning, Cidco officials later said that supply will resume by late evening. But residents said that the water supply was not restored till the time of evening supply. "We are sure we will not be able to get water till Wednesday since the pumping system takes too long to streamline the supply. We faced a cut recently and did not get water for almost five days," said Mohit Gunde, a Kharghar resident. An officer from Cidco water supply wing said, "Supply has been resumed from pumping station but due to an empty line it will take few hours to reach the consumers. Supply to Kharghar, Dronagir and Ulwe is expected to start soon and Taloja will get water by Wednesday evening." With World Environment Day on Friday, environmentalists and activists in Navi Mumbai are concerned about the number of issues that plague the satellite city. From the perennial garbage problem to dumping debris in mangroves and incessant cutting of trees, activists and residents feel that the newly elected civic body should prioritize these issues and find long lasting solutions. Kharghar resident and noted environmentalist Dr Shubhalakshmi said Navi Mumbai should have more green cover. "The existing water bodies should be safeguarded and protected. Also if the public transport services were better there would be less private vehicles on the road," she said. NAVI MUMBAI: Residents of Kharghar, Taloja, Ulwe and Dronagiri, which come under Cidco, are facing acute shortage of drinking water since the last five days. Parts of Kharghar and Taloja are the worst-hit areas. "We are running around to fetch water for our daily use even on the fifth day of water cut. Sector 5 is badly affected as it is an high rise area. We are fed up with Cidco's service," said Snehal Bhujbal from sector 5, Kharghar. Cidco officials said that pressure in the main line is still building up to reach the high rise areas. Though Ulwe and Dronagiri require less volume compared to Kharghar, residents from these emerging townships are also complaining of shortage in supply. Cidco is now thinking about asking NMMC supply 5 MLD on regular basis to tide over the situation. NAVI MUMBAI: After a day-long break on Wednesday due to non-availability of police teams, Cidco demolition team took up the drive yet again on Thursday to raze six illegal structures in sector 13, Kharghar. Sources said that the drive in Kharghar was to divert the attention of angry PAPs from NNMMC areas such as Nerul and Talvali, where demolition was carried out last week and early this week amidst unprecedented agitation. Over a hundred cops were deployed in the periphery of the demolition site as precautionary measures to thwart any attempt to derail the process. Cidco also stationed 50 of its own security personnel as support staff. Unlike Talvali where tension prevailed, the drive at Kharghar went off peacefully.
